Both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Dallas Cowboys enter the 2026 NFL Draft with a clear priority: upgrading their pass rush. And in a class loaded with defensive talent, many evaluators believe there is no better edge rusher than Texas Tech standout David Bailey.

Both franchises have already hosted Bailey on top-30 visits, and reports suggest each is exploring trade-up scenarios to secure him. The problem? Only one team will land him. So which one should it be?

David Bailey Draft Projection

Bailey began his collegiate career with the Stanford Cardinal football, where he totaled 14.5 sacks, 22.5 tackles for loss, and seven forced fumbles across three seasons. He then transferred to Texas Tech Red Raiders football for his senior year and elevated his game to another level.

In 14 games, the 20-year-old recorded 19.5 tackles for loss, 14.5 sacks, three passes defended, and one fumble recovery. His dominant campaign earned him unanimous All-American honors and vaulted him to the top of draft boards. His 14.5 sacks tied for the national lead, while his 94.4 pass-rush grade from Pro Football Focus ranked first among edge defenders in this class.

At 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds, Bailey blends explosive burst with elite first-step quickness and the flexibility to bend around offensive tackles. His athletic profile and relentless motor give him true game-wrecker potential at the next level. It is no surprise he is widely projected as a top-five pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Who Should Trade Up for Bailey?

Both teams face the same challenge: Bailey may be out of reach at their current draft positions. Kansas City holds the No. 9 pick, while Dallas sits at No. 12.

The Chiefs have reportedly engaged with the Arizona Cardinals, who hold the No. 3 overall pick. A trade to that spot is plausible, especially since Kansas City owns two first-round selections this year.

However, the cost would likely be steep, potentially requiring both first-round picks plus additional assets. While Kansas City finished with just 35 sacks last season, tied for seventh-fewest in the league, edge rusher is not their only concern. Offensive tackle and wide receiver remain significant needs.

Given their roster flexibility and multiple holes, an all-in move for a single defender may not be the most balanced approach.

Dallas, on the other hand, appears to be in discussions with the Cleveland Browns, who hold the No. 6 pick. While there is no guarantee Bailey would still be available there, the Cowboys seem motivated to move up.

Like Kansas City, Dallas also recorded 35 sacks last season. But unlike the Chiefs, their pass rush stands out as their most urgent need and Bailey is everything they need.

Kansas City has the flexibility to address multiple needs and remain competitive without sacrificing major assets. Dallas does not have that same luxury. For them, acquiring a potential franchise edge rusher could be transformative, even if that means giving up both of their first round selections.
