Anthony Edwards is the engine that drives the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 24-year-old guard averaged 28.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists this season, ranking third in the NBA in scoring, and has been the centerpiece of back-to-back Western Conference Finals runs for Minnesota.

Edwards suffered a hyperextension and bone bruise in his left knee during Game 4 of the Timberwolves’ first-round series against the Denver Nuggets. He also had been managing swelling in his right knee due to patellofemoral pain syndrome heading into the postseason. Testing ruled out any ligament damage, but the knee has kept him sidelined ever since.

Minnesota gutted out a six-game series win over the Nuggets without their star, riding Jaden McDaniels’ 32-point performance to close out Denver 110-98 in Game 6. The Wolves now face a stiff test against the second-seeded San Antonio Spurs and Victor Wembanyama in the Western Conference Semifinals.

Anthony Edwards Listed Week-To-Week Ahead Of Spurs Series

Coach Chris Finch confirmed Edwards remains week-to-week, leaving his availability for the early games of the second round very much in doubt. ESPN’s Shams Charania has reported that Edwards will miss “at minimum” two weeks, meaning Game 1 against San Antonio on May 5 almost certainly comes too soon.

The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski reported that the expectation is Edwards will return at some point during the second round, with Finch noting that Edwards has a strong track record of recovering from injuries faster than originally anticipated.

Minnesota will also be without Donte DiVincenzo for the remainder of the playoffs after he suffered a torn Achilles in Game 4. The Wolves still have scoring firepower in McDaniels, Ayo Dosunmu and Julius Randle to keep the series competitive while they wait for their franchise player to return.

Game 1 of the Timberwolves vs. Spurs series tips off Tuesday, May 5, in San Antonio.
