Donavan Mitchell Compares Knicks Fans To Cowboys After Game 3 Loss

Donovan Mitchell is Cleveland’s franchise cornerstone, the engine behind a Cavaliers team that clawed through a seven-game battle against the Toronto Raptors and a hard-fought second-round series against the Detroit Pistons just to reach the Eastern Conference Finals. He has carried this team on his back for three playoff rounds, so when he steps to the podium after a loss, people listen.

After the Knicks defeated the Cavaliers 121-108 in Game 3 on Sunday to take a commanding 3-0 series lead, Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse looked more like Madison Square Garden North. New York fans showed up in force, turning what should have been a home-court advantage into one of the more surreal postseason atmospheres in recent memory.

Rather than show frustration, Mitchell leaned into the moment with a disarming level of self-awareness. “I’m from New York. This doesn’t shock me. They do it in every arena. It’s like Cowboys fans. It’s how Knicks fans are. I was one back in the day,” he said in his postgame press conference. It was a grounded, honest answer that drew immediate attention online, and it reflected just how genuine a moment it was.

Cavaliers On the Brink as Knicks Dominate Game 3

Mitchell finished with 23 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals on Sunday, but his minus-22 plus/minus told the real story of a Cleveland team that never found its footing. The Cavaliers shot just 29.3% from three, got torched in transition, and allowed New York to build a lead as large as 17 points.

The Knicks were firing on all cylinders. Jalen Brunson posted 30 points and drew nine fouls, controlling the game at his pace from start to finish. Mikal Bridges was arguably even more efficient, going 11-of-15 from the field for 22 points. OG Anunoby added 21 points and Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists in a masterclass performance at both ends. New York’s 27 assists on 43 made field goals told the story of a team playing with genuine chemistry and purpose.

For Cleveland, Evan Mobley led the team with 24 points and Jarrett Allen chipped in 17, but the supporting cast could not match New York’s depth or firepower. James Harden contributed a 19-point, 5-rebound, 5-assist line , but also turned the ball over six times at critical moments.

No team in NBA history has ever recovered from a 3-0 playoff series deficit. The Cavaliers will need a historically rare run starting in Game 4 just to extend the series. For a team that already pushed through two seven-game series to get here, the physical and mental toll is real.

Cleveland also got here the hard way, dispatching the Raptors and the Pistons each in seven games. This group has shown resilience all postseason, but facing elimination against a Knicks squad playing some of the best basketball in the East is a different challenge entirely.

Mitchell’s postgame tone, calm and borderline philosophical, suggested a player who is not panicking. But calm composure and confidence can only take a team so far when the scoreboard reads 3-0.

Game 4 tips off Tuesday, May 26 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. Tip-off is set for 8:30 PM ET, with New York carrying a 53.8% win probability heading in.
