Luka Doncic has been the Lakers’ offensive engine since arriving in Los Angeles, but the Slovenian superstar has not stepped on the floor since April 2, when he suffered a Grade 2 left hamstring strain against these same Oklahoma City Thunder. His absence has loomed over every possession of this Western Conference Semifinals series.
The Lakers managed to survive without Doncic in the first round, edging the Houston Rockets in six games. But Oklahoma City is a different challenge entirely. Without their leading scorer’s shot creation and late-clock control, Los Angeles has struggled to keep pace with the deepest and most athletic team left in the West.
Luka Doncic Ruled Out For Game 4 Against Oklahoma City Thunder
Doncic will not play in Game 4 on Monday, May 11, and the Lakers head into the night trailing the series 3-0 after a 131-108 Game 3 blowout at Crypto.com Arena.
ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported that Doncic revealed an eight-week recovery window from his initial MRI. Since the injury occurred on April 2, that timeline puts a potential return around June 2, with the NBA Finals slated to begin June 3. McMenamin noted that Doncic’s body language when he spoke to reporters “didn’t look like a person who plans to be playing in the playoffs any time soon.”
The cost of Doncic’s absence extends beyond his scoring. It has reshuffled Oklahoma City’s defensive math for everyone else. Austin Reaves has averaged 18.7 points in the series while shooting just 40% from the field and 25% from three as the Thunder focus their physical defense on him with Doncic unavailable.
Oklahoma City has outscored Los Angeles by a combined 54 points in the second half across the first three games. The Lakers have kept it competitive at halftime, but the Thunder have simply been a different team after the break.
Doncic addressed his situation openly between Games 1 and 2, saying, “It’s very frustrating. I don’t think people understand how frustrating it is. All I wanna do is play basketball, especially at this time.” Game 4 tips off at Crypto.com Arena at 10:30 p.m. ET on Prime Video.
