Stephanie White is not backing down. The Indiana Fever received an official warning from the WNBA after Caitlin Clark was a late scratch due to a back injury, with the league confirming the team failed to report her status in time. Rather than accept the league’s position quietly, their head coach came out swinging.
White was asked about the warning during her pregame press conference Friday ahead of the Fever’s home matchup against the Golden State Valkyries. She did not mince words. White responded to the warning with “for what?” and insisted the Fever “did things the right way.”
The Fever did not announce Clark would be missing from Wednesday’s game against the Portland Fire until 5:20 p.m. ET, less than two hours before tipoff, and she had not appeared on the pre-game injury report despite Clark sitting out of Tuesday’s practice due to back stiffness.
The WNBA requires teams to list injured players on a report by 5 p.m. the night before the game. If a player’s status changes overnight or early in the day, teams are expected to update the injury report accordingly. The league viewed Indiana’s handling of the situation as a clear violation.
White has repeatedly been tight-lipped about her players’ injuries, deferring questions to the medical staff, which is not permitted to speak publicly about player health. When reminded of that policy, White shrugged her shoulders and sarcastically said, “I’m sorry.”
The Fever currently sit at 3-2 on the 2026 season, second in the Eastern Conference. The league did not fine Indiana, only issuing a warning, and has officially closed the book on the controversy. Whether White’s public defiance invites further scrutiny from the league remains to be seen.
