Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the reigning NBA MVP and the heartbeat of the Oklahoma City Thunder, but Game 2 of their Western Conference Semifinals matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers brought some unwanted attention his way. The Thunder star spent much of the night battling foul trouble, and a third-quarter incident with Austin Reaves turned into one of the most-discussed plays of the night.

Gilgeous-Alexander picked up his fourth foul of the game just 1:26 into the second half after getting tangled with Reaves off the ball. The Thunder challenged the call, but the review resulted in the foul being upgraded to a Flagrant 1. It was the first flagrant foul of Gilgeous-Alexander’s career across 582 regular-season and playoff games. Reaves went down clutching his shoulder but remained in the game, and converted all three free throws from the sequence to give the Lakers a five-point lead.

Despite the controversy, OKC’s depth took over. The Thunder closed the third quarter on a 23-9 run with Gilgeous-Alexander on the bench, with Jared McCain and Ajay Mitchell leading the charge. Shai finished with 22 points and OKC pulled away 125-107 to take a commanding 2-0 series lead.

After the game, Gilgeous-Alexander addressed the play directly: “I didn’t get an explanation. But I also didn’t ask. I’m not going to be able to change the call. I didn’t mean to hurt Austin. I didn’t want to use it as a distraction.” The NBA retains the right to investigate flagrant fouls further after a game and assess additional discipline.

The series now shifts to Los Angeles, with Game 3 set for Sunday, May 10 at Crypto.com Arena.
